CEMMS(SA) consist of 11 Centres for Metabolic Medicine and Surgery in SA.  The Administrative Head Office is situated in Midrand at the Netcare Waterfall City Hospital, where a full team of experts are taking care of obese patients.  The team is headed by a super-specialised Endocrinologist, Prof Tess van der Merwe, who has received her PHD in Metabolism through both the University of the Witwatersrand and the University of Goteborg, Sweden.  The rest of the team is Dr Gary Fetter, Specialist Surgeon, Dr Gerhard Botha, Family Physician who has specialised, inter alia in Sport Medicine, David Goncalves, Psychologist, Nicola Drabble and Francette Bekker, dieticians and Sister Karen Gibson who runs the Infusion Clinic.  Once a week we are privileged to have a Psychiatrist, Dr Zubeida Mahomedy in our team to attend to patients.  Obesity is a disease that spiraled out of control, not only in our country but throughout the world and the challenges facing us are enormous. The Specialists and administrative staff in our team are patient-centred and providing the best possible care to exceed our patients’ expectations in all aspects of healthcare.

We have a  custom-designed database which is world-class and probably the most utilised and updated source of information.  Statistical records are constantly updated and at any given time, we can provide factual information on our patients’ procedures, types of surgeries and complications.

Prof Tess van der Merwe engages into talks on local radio stations and will participate as key guest speaker on the Bonitas House Calls programme broadcasted on SABC2.
