Can you imagine trying to contact someone before the invention of cell phones and landlines? Having to send smoke signals and letters with a messenger. Thank goodness we’ve discovered faster and more effective means of communication! In addition to communication, over the centuries our daily lives have also changed in terms of transportation and even nutrition. So, let’s have a blast from the past and celebrate the advancements we’ve made to live life at its best.
THE HISTORY OF NUTRITION
Did you know that the first recorded dietary advice was carved into a Babylonian stone tablet in about 2500 BC1? Greek Philosopher Anaxagoras suggested the existence of nutrients in 475BC when he stated that food which is absorbed by the human body contains ‘homeomerics’ (generative components)2. To this date, Hippocrates is quoted on his words of ‘let food be your medicine and medicine be your food’. From around 400BC the physician recognized and documented his concerns about obesity and called for moderation and emphasizing exercise3.
Nutrition is a science that is constantly evolving. With time, people have become aware of the fact that what you eat directly affects your health. Throughout history, researchers have provided science-based evidence to justify why certain dietary recommendations should be adhered to and as we learn more about these, our eating habits have evolved.
People are aware of the importance of breakfast however not everyone knows what constitutes a good breakfast. The breakfast recommendations made centuries ago may not be the best options now considering the advancements in nutrition science and research. So, this leads to my ‘food for thought’ and next question. Everything in life has changed so why hasn’t your breakfast cereal?
